People often ask, “I’ve never even heard of fascia — what got you started in this work?” or something similar.

My first introduction to fascia was in 2017 when I came across a book by Ashley Black called The Cellulite Myth: It’s Not Fat, It’s Fascia.

Ashley Black described fascia, a body system I’d never heard of before, despite being a Certified Nursing Assistant and growing up in a medical family with my midwife mom. I was intrigued by this “new” system and its impact on our bodies and lives. After reading the book, I started paying attention to my own fascia and sharing what I learned with family and friends.

I bought Ashley Black’s fascia tools and began experimenting on myself and anyone willing to let me. Everywhere I went, I observed people’s posture, movement, and alignment. I started noticing things I’d never paid attention to before — like neck posture, uneven shoulders, misaligned hips, knee and foot positioning while standing and walking, etc. I was enthralled to see how fascia provides support for every part of the body and also creates compensation patterns after injury.

I wanted to somehow get certified to provide fascia treatments for people around me. Ashley Black was not offering practitioner certification programs at the time, but I learned about John Barnes Myofascial Release (MFR). In 2020 I attended my first MFR training course and fell in love with this gentle, intuitive way of supporting the body to heal. Over the next several years, I attended every MFR course I could.

Finally, in 2024 I was able to train directly with the Fascia Queen herself, Ashley Black, at her Fascia Advancement Academy in Houston, Texas. It was an honor to receive one-on-one training and witness her passion for helping people heal and live their best lives. She is truly inspiring to me and continues to be one of my top role models.

In my quest for deeper understanding of the fascia system, I have attended training classes in Gillespie Approach Craniosacral Fascial Therapy and the Lori Hendrickson Craniosacral Therapy method. I trained for two years to become a Clinical EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) Tapping practitioner. EFT is a healing modality designed to help clear the effects of trauma in the body. Trauma is believed to be stored in the fascia system, so EFT dovetails beautifully with all areas of fascia treatment.

My sessions contain aspects of all my training and experience, with each one tailored to the specific client on that specific day. Some clients start with a few minutes of EFT Tapping to calm the nervous system when they arrive, then finish with fascia work. Most sessions have some cranial work, either to begin or end. Often there is a bit of training about the fascia system, and possibly a few suggested stretches for areas that have been tight. I typically offer a fascia tool for at-home use between sessions.

Always we approach the fascia system with gentleness and respect, inviting the tissue to release and never attempting to force or lead.
